Fast Facts:
Pursuit: Jazz singer and composer
Definition of success: “Being happy in what one is doing and appreciative of what one receives in return.”
My next guest is a jazz singer and composer hailing from Atlanta, Georgia. His music has taken him all over North America and he’s a regular performer across Europe. He has played New York’s legendary Rainbow Lounge as well as the top venues on Broadway. His debut album ‘Home’ is out now and he’s here to tell us his story: William Price King
Like all performers, it takes dedication and not a little courage to go out and show what you’re made of in front of the expectant crowds – what were the first steps?
“I started studying music at an early age,” William explains. “Firstly studying piano, then clarinet, and then on to becoming a singer. My early music training was in classical music, in which I earned a bachelor’s as well as a master’s degree. While living in New York City I made the transition from classical music to jazz, following the footsteps of my mentors Nat King Cole and Mel Tormé. Composing became my second nature as I was highly inspired by the melodic genius of both of my mentors.”
If you take the time to visit William’s website and click on some of the tracks from ‘Home’, you’ll see exactly what it sounds like when a classical singer turns to jazz. I’m no musician (as friends and family will attest) but even to my inexpert ear there’s something very versatile and clean to William’s voice. It’s an a-typical sound, but a soothing one. It’s difficult to imagine that somewhere behind the voice is a regular guy doing regular things. As always, I’m keen to get an insight into a day-in-the-life.
“There are two types of “typical day” for me. On days when I don’t have to perform I get up early, do Gyrotonics, practice or compose, take long walks with my wife, and just enjoy the day. On performance days I sleep late and lead a more contemplative life until it’s time to go do the show. Generally I practice at least two hours a day, except performance days, which are more contemplative.”
And the best part about being a musician?
“Though I love to compose, my deepest satisfaction comes from being on stage,” William enthuses. “Singing and performing, and the interchange with my musicians and the audience.”
It’s a far cry from the rat race, which leads me nicely onto the classic poser: does William ever have cause to envy those in a more routine profession?
“I do not envy anyone. We all have our responsibilities with regards to our respective goals. I’m always happy to see my fellow artists working and achieving.”
And finally, any advice for those looking to realise their own ambitions?
“I would say, “To thine own self be true.” If this is what you really want to do, then focus on it, and don’t let anyone deter you from your goal. It can only be achieved through hard work and determination.”
I’d like to thank William Price King for stopping by and sharing his experiences with us. You can follow him @wpkofficial and if you’d like to hear some snippets from ‘Home’ head over to his website:
In the mean time here’s a teaser from his latest video featuring excerpts from a live concert with his quartet:
